UK bed sizes explained

Bed size is the first decision in your Shloff design, and it shapes everything that follows. This guide covers every UK standard size in centimetres and feet, with a sense of the room each one asks for.

Start with the room, then the bed

Two measurements decide which size works for you: the floor space you have, and the walkway you want around it. Measure the room at its narrowest point and note where the door swings into the space. Once you have those two figures, the right size tends to choose itself.

Every UK bed size in full

Size Centimetres Feet & inches Best for
Small Single 75 × 190 2'6" × 6'3" Children's rooms and tight box rooms
Single 90 × 190 3'0" × 6'3" One sleeper in a smaller bedroom
Small Double 120 × 190 4'0" × 6'3" One adult with room to spread, or two at a squeeze
Double 135 × 190 4'6" × 6'3" The standard size for two, in an average room
King 150 × 200 5'0" × 6'6" Couples who want more width and a little extra length
Super King 180 × 200 6'0" × 6'6" The most generous size, suited to larger rooms

A few of our designs come in a selected range of these sizes, so check the size options on each model as you build it.

How much space to leave around the bed

Aim for a clear walkway of around 60cm on any side you need to reach. 70cm or more feels relaxed and gives you room to make the bed and open nearby drawers. Where the bed sits against a wall, you only need that clearance on the open sides.

Allow for the bedroom door and any wardrobe doors to swing fully without catching the frame. It is the kind of thing that is easy to overlook on paper and obvious the moment a delivery arrives.

Measure the room first. The bed that fits the space will always sleep better than the one that fills it.

What the mattress size leaves out

The figures above are mattress sizes. A Shloff headboard adds a little to the overall length, and a winged or tall headboard sits proud of the wall by a few centimetres. If you choose an ottoman base, leave clearance at the foot or side so it can lift cleanly. Factor both into your measurement and the finished bed will sit exactly as you pictured it.

Choosing your size at Shloff

Every Shloff bed starts with size. Pick yours in the configurator and the fabric, headboard and base options follow from there. If your room sits between two sizes, our team can talk through the trade-off before you order, or you can see the sizes at full scale in the Prestwich showroom.
